How to Choose a Bankruptcy Lawyer

Most people do everything they can to avoid bankruptcy, from cutting their spending to working with creditors. But sometimes bankruptcy truly is the best solution to debt troubles, and then you’re faced with the task of selecting a bankruptcy attorney to help you. While you can choose to prepare and file your own case, there is a risk that you may miss important details or make filing decisions that could be costly in the long run. The investment you’ll make by working with an experienced attorney could save you stress negative consequences that could last for years.

Choose Wisely

Once you decide to partner with an attorney, there are some things to keep in mind as you research your options. By asking the right questions, you’ll find the right fit for your situation and preferences. Be sure to find an attorney who is:

  • Knowledgeable: Any type of attorney can help you file your case, but someone who specializes in bankruptcy will be up to date on bankruptcy law and the various eligibility requirements. I’ll be able to help you decide which chapter will be most beneficial for you and will strive to help you discharge as much of your debt as possible while preserving your important property.
  • Understanding: Being faced with bankruptcy can make you feel vulnerable and uncertain about your future, so it’s important to have someone by your side who is understanding and encouraging. I know it’s stressful to not know how you’re going to pay your bills and to have creditors call to collect your debt. And while I’m comfortable with legal proceedings, this may be something new and intimidating for you. When we meet, I’ll take the time to listen to your concerns and will make sure you’re informed about your responsibilities and what to expect each step of the way.
  • Organized: It can be overwhelming to think of completing all your paperwork and gathering all the documents required for filing, but I’ll provide you with an itemized list of all of your responsibilities. Deadlines will be clearly spelled out, and I’ll give you any forms that you’ll need.
  • Open and Accessible: I’ll share all of my fees and deadlines with you up front so that you can make a plan and will never be caught off guard. We’ll also discuss what services are included in your package. If you ever have any questions or concerns along the way, I’m available to provide whatever information you need.
